iDo Launches Experiential Learning Project at
Thurgood Marshall Academic High School
SAN FRANCISCO, California-November 14, 2008 The Industrial Design Outreach (iDo) announced the return of the Community Bench Project to San Francisco's Thurgood Marshall Academic High School. The Community Bench Project applies experiential learning to introduce high school students to design practices through the design and fabrication of a bench. Each student's contribution to the bench reflects the individual's sense of community through creative art. The first bench created by the project has recently been featured in the Young at Art exhibit at the San Francisco De Young Museum.
iDo is a design program run by students at San Francisco State University. iDo promotes the field of design and uses design methodologies to enhance the education of both high school and university students. iDo has been invited back to Thurgood Marshall after an overwhelming response by the administration and students following the completion and display of the first bench.
Thurgood Marshall has offered iDo a dedicated class titled "Industrial Design," which teaches students design thinking, processes and practices. Students have been self-selected and enrolled in this course because of their interest in design and a desire to learn applied computer graphic skills.
iDo's Community Bench Project is made possible by the continued funding from Miranda Lux, a true partner in the promotion of design education. Additional funding for this project has been provided by The Fear Not Foundation. Its contribution will be used to establish a scholarship award to be granted to one high school student from the Community Bench Project.
